'Slang dictionary' shown to Birmingham murder trial as jury told meaning of 'zk', 'M' and 'wet'
The trial is concerned with a teenager alleged to have killed another teenager amid a postcode gang war in Birmingham
A 'slang dictionary' has been provided to a Birmingham murder trial jury presiding over an alleged gang killing.
The glossary included more than 40 terms ranging from innocuous slang phrases such as 'yard' meaning someone's home, to 'wet' and 'splash', meaning to stab someone.
The list was adduced into evidence during the trial of 18-year-old Oumar Traore at Birmingham Crown Court.
FULL STORY OF TRIAL OPENING - Boy 'murdered' teenager amid Handsworth versus Aston postcode gang war, court told
It is alleged that on November 16, last year, when he was aged 17, he stabbed to death 19-year-old Yassin Alama, on Hutton Road, Handsworth.
A jury has previously been told that Traore, who was nicknamed 'Omizz', was part of the 'B20' gang named after the postcode territory in Handsworth.
Whereas Mr Alama was said to be associated with a rival gang in Aston.
PC Gareth Evans, who has worked in Birmingham gang intelligence since 2010, was called to give evidence today (Tuesday).
His first task was to take the jury through the 'slang dictionary', confirming his interpretations of certains words which have appeared in text and social media evidence in the case.
The jury was told that 'zk' meant 'zombie knife', while 'nizzy' meant 'knife' as did 'Mindi', which is the Somali word for the weapon.
Furthermore 'chete' was short for 'machete'.
The court heard 'jakes', 'flizz' and 'Feds' translated to 'police', while 'undies' referred to 'undercover police'.
Pc Evans stated 'wet', 'splash' and 'yinged' were words which described stabbing a person, while 'slapping' referred to 'shooting'.
'Packed', 'smoke' and 'duppy' meant to kill someone, while 'M' was short for 'Murder', the jury was told.
We have included the full list of slang phrases below.
Traore, from Hutton Road, denies murder and possessing a knife in public. The trial continues.
