Dozens of people treated in hospital corridors in Bristol every day

In a damning first-of-its-kind report, the NHS has published data exposing the grim reality facing sick Brits attending A&E and left languishing in makeshift “wards” without dignity.
According to the newly released data for May, more than 90,000 vulnerable people were subjected to "corridor care" across hospitals in England last month because overstretched emergency departments simply cannot cope.
It is the first time the figures have been released after NHS bosses ordered hospitals to compile and publish the data with a target of eradicating corridor care by 2029.
Under official guidelines introduced this March, anyone left waiting for 45 minutes or more in a hallway, waiting room, or "clinically inappropriate" area is considered to be receiving corridor care.
The guidelines reveal the desperate conditions endured by patients but also by exhausted NHS staff working on the frontline.
The figures for May show that in the North Bristol NHS Trust, 51 patients are treated each day in corridors. University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust treated an average of 35 patients per day in corridors over the same period.
Daily figures show that in May, more than 69,000 corridor care incidents were reported at A&E units in England. That’s an average of 2,241 on any given day.
The figures also show that another 669 hospital patients on general and acute wards received care for more than 45 minutes on a ward “outside a bed space” each day, for a total of 20,611 incidents in May.
Figures for individual acute trusts show that 3,090 A&E patients and 575 general and acute ward patients received corridor care at London North West University Healthcare NHS in May, more than anywhere else in England. The Trust covers four hospitals - Central Middlesex, Ealing, Northwick Park and St Mark’s.
There were also a combined total of 3,238 corridor care patients at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, which operates seven hospitals across Brighton and Sussex.
At Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust there were 3,057 corridor care patients, 3,024 at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, and 2,885 at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Government has previously promised to slash A&E waiting times and put an end to the hallway health crisis.
While waiting times have been falling, these new figures show there is more work to do.
