Byker arson investigation launched after fire at allotment site
Emergency services were called to the area around St Michael's Road and Dalton Street on Saturday night
A fire at an allotment site in Byker is being treated as suspected arson, police have confirmed. Emergency services were called to the area around St Michael's Road and Dalton Street shortly before 11pm on Saturday night.
Two crews of firefighters from Byker Community Fire Station spent just over two hours battling the blaze, with police cordoning off part of St Michael's Road. A police van remained in the area on Sunday morning, though the cordon was taken down.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 11pm on Saturday (April 18) we were alerted to a fire at a premises on Dalton Street in the Byker area of Newcastle. Emergency services attended and thankfully, no-one was reported to have been injured in the incident.
"While enquiries are at an early stage, the incident is being treated as suspected arson. Anyone with information should send us a direct message on social media or use the live chat and 'report' function on our Force website.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We can confirm that on Saturday, 18 April, two appliances attended an incident in Newcastle. The emergency call came in to our Control Room team at 22:54 and crews from Byker Community Fire Station were despatched to the scene.
"The incident involved a fire in allotments in the Byker area. Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reels to safely extinguish the blaze, before leaving the scene around 01:00."
