There is ongoing rail disruption at Newcastle Central Station, due to an 'object caught in overhead lines'. National Rail is reporting that trains between Newcastle and Durham could be delayed by up to 30 minutes due to the incident.

Disruption now cleared

Disruption causing rail delays in the Newcastle area after an object was caught on the overhead wires has now been cleared, National Rail have confirmed.

Posting on X, a statement read: "Disruption following an object being caught on the overhead wires between Newcastle and Durham has now ended."

Details on overhead line equipment and delays

The LNER website says: "Delays can occur when a problem affects the overhead line equipment, requiring us to either stop or slow down services through the area. There are lots of different components that make up our overhead line equipment, and lots of different ways that a delay can occur including:

  • Power supply failures, which can cover very small to very large areas.
  • High winds blowing the overhead wires out of alignment, or blowing vegetation onto the equipment.
  • An impact with the train’s equipment due to a faulty component.
  • Wildlife such as birds landing on the equipment and causing a short circuit.
  • Extreme heat causing the wires to expand and sag.
Disruption now expected until 3pm

National Rail has shared an update on the Newcastle Central Station delays on social media, saying that the disruption is now expected until 3pm.

Current situation with Newcastle Central Station delays

There are delays of up to 30 minutes on London North Eastern Railway, Transpennine Express and CrossCountry Northbound between Darlington and Newcastle due to an object being caught on the overhead line.

The LNER account on X said: "An object caught in the overhead electric wires has blocked all lines at Newcastle. Services may be delayed running through this station. The disruption is expected until 14.00."

The National Rail account on X said: "An object being caught on the overhead wires in the Newcastle area means some lines are blocked. As a result, trains between Newcastle and Durham may be delayed by up to 30 minutes."
