Disruption caused by a points failure in Morpeth has now ended.
LNER has confirmed: "Disruption caused by this fault has now ended and services are no longer affected by this problem by major disruption across the network remains."
Delays have eased on London North Eastern Railway, Transpennine Express and CrossCountry between Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley following earlier problem with the points at Morpeth and earlier speed restrictions.
The latest update from National Rail reads:
Trains are running at a reduced speed following a points failure in the Morpeth area. Whilst final checks are taking place, trains running between Edinburgh / Morpeth and Newcastle may be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
Northern services between Newcastle and Carlisle are currently being disrupted due to a points failure near Haltwhistle.
Train services are now able to run between Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle in both directions, but due to an ongoing points issue services maybe delayed, in both directions.
Train services running through these stations will be delayed by up to 45 minutes. Disruption is expected until 15:45.
Services are significantly disrupted today due to a points failure between Morpeth and Newcastle, meaning trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.
Network Rail staff are onsite to restore normal working as quickly as possible. Disruption caused by this fault is expected until the end of the day.
If your train has been cancelled, you will be able to use your existing ticket on another service.
- LNER customers can use existing tickets to travel with the following train companies at no extra cost: TransPennine Express between Newcastle and Edinburgh and Great Northern and Thameslink between London Kings Cross, Stevenage and Peterborough.
- TransPennine Express customers can travel on any TransPennine Express, Northern, or LNER service within the two hours before or after your cancelled service.
If you were delayed getting into your booked destination by over 30 minutes you may be entitled to compensation.

The latest update from National Rail reads:
A points failure in the Morpeth area is causing disruption to journeys running between Morpeth and Newcastle. All lines are currently blocked between these stations, therefore, trains running between Edinburgh / Morpeth and Newcastle may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.
Trains are being delayed by up to one hour due to a points failure at Morpeth.
The rail disruption between Morpeth and Newcastle is currently expected to last until 1pm this afternoon.
A statement on the National Rail website reads:
A points failure in the Morpeth area is causing disruption to journeys running between Morpeth and Newcastle. All lines are currently blocked between these stations, therefore, trains running between Edinburgh / Morpeth and Newcastle may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.
Passengers can check National Rail Enquiries' real-time Journey Planner for updates before they travel.
National Rail reports that engineers are on site working to fix the fault.
A number of rail companies have been affected by the disruption:
- CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street / Bristol Temple Meads / Plymouth, and also between Aberdeen / Glasgow Central and Plymouth
- LNER between Inverness / Aberdeen / Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
- Lumo between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
- Northern between Morpeth and Newcastle
- TransPennine Express between Edinburgh and Newcastle
Services running between Morpeth and Newcastle may be cancelled or delayed.
Train journeys between Morpeth and Newcastle are experiencing disruption due to a points failure at Morpeth.
Delays of up to 30 minutes on London North Eastern Railway, Transpennine Express and CrossCountry between Newcastle and Alnmouth due to points failure at Morpeth.
Cancellations on Northern Westbound between Newcastle and Carlisle due to faulty train at Hexham.
The A192 Southbound at Earsdon is partially blocked due to reports of a collision at B1325 Hartley Lane.
Traffic is slow in both directions on the A19 at the Tyne Tunnel.
Nexus reports that there are delays on the Metro network this morning due to freezing weather conditions resulting in trains taking longer than usual to leave the depot. Staff are trying to resole this as soon as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
