Northumberland woman explains secret to living long life as she celebrates 100th birthday

Margaret Grumbley tells of the one thing she thinks helps live a long life - and it's something many people do

A 'friendly' resident of a care home in Ashington has celebrated her 100th birthday, and revealed the secret to a long life. A special party was hosted at Woodhorn Park Care Home for Margaret Grumbley, who celebrated the milestone earlier this month.

She was joined by relatives, friends, her fellow residents, and staff to mark her centenary, and also received her card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, recognising the landmark day. Margaret has lived at Woodhorn Park in Northumberland since March 2022, where she is "enjoying a new chapter in her life".

The secret that everyone wants to know, just how Margaret has lived such a long life, is thankfully something that many people do themselves. Margaret has said that what she believes is the reason for her longevity is "drinking lots of cups of tea".

Always up for a chat with others about the 'good old day', Margaret became a typist when she left school, working in various offices. She has two daughters and a son, and loved going on holidays with her family, who all attended the celebrations on Thursday, April 9.

Margaret was also presented with multiple homemade cakes, adorned with strawberries and chocolate, enjoyed by all who came to the party. Singer Mark McCann also came to the home to perform, and many of the residents were up dancing and "enjoying themselves immensely."

Commenting on a Facebook post celebrating Margaret's birthday, her granddaughter Vicky Newton said: "Thank you all for making my nans birthday so special, and for being so accommodating with us all there."

Emma Saunders General Manager of Barchester Woodhorn Park Care Home, added: "We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable lady as she reaches this amazing milestone. Margaret is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as she breaks into her next century.

"We are also very grateful to all our local community who responded to our invitation to send Margaret 100 birthday cards, and were overwhelmed as she received over 100, and even received cards from as far as the Isle of Man."
