Cool down your bedroom for nothing using one common bathroom item
The hack means you don't need to buy expensive fans for your rooms to sleep at night
The recent heatwave serves as a reminder that summer is just around the corner and that staying cool can be more challenging than many people realise. While temperatures drop slightly at night, long summer days provide little relief.
There's nothing worse than struggling to sleep because of the heat, leaving you sweaty and uncomfortable for hours while lying in bed. Many might suggest turning on a fan; however, the noise can be distracting when you're trying to sleep, not to mention that it consumes electricity, leading to higher energy bills.
Additionally, many people dislike using fans in their bedrooms as they can circulate dust and pollen, making the room feel stuffy. Instead, John Lawless from BestHeating has shared a simple and inexpensive method to keep your home cool at night, and it only requires a towel.
John said: "If you open a window and hang a damp towel or sheet in front of it that has been soaked in cold water it can cool the room down.
"This is because the warm air will have to pass through the sheet and turn it into cold air before it enters the room."
During the day, sunlight warms the air near windows, causing it to become trapped inside the room. When you close your curtains at night, that heat is sealed in.
It may sound unusual, but using a towel can help. Water requires energy to evaporate, and it will draw that energy from the surrounding air, cooling it down.
Water from a damp towel will pull heat out of the air near a window before it enters your home, helping significantly cool a bedroom so you can get a better night’s sleep.
To start, fill a sink or basin with cold water and slightly dampen a towel. Ensure the towel is moist but not dripping, as a towel that is too wet will prevent air from passing through easily, making the room feel humid instead.
Next, hang the towel next to an open window to enhance the effectiveness of this homemade cooling method. It's important to have some airflow, but don't worry if there's no wind; even a little airflow will suffice. You can also hang a towel in front of a doorway if you wish.
When the towel dries out, simply dampen it again, and your bedroom should feel much more comfortable in the evening, regardless of the heat outside.
