Mysterious inflatable dolls take over Quayside as onlookers speculate on Squid Game link

The dolls first appeared last night along the banks of the River Tyne, with a second popping up today

The Newcastle Quayside has seen some mysterious visitors over the last few days. Used to the wild and wonderful images of a Tyneside night out, the banks of the Tyne are host to two huge inflatable dolls, one on either side of the Millenium Bridge.

Tests carried out last night and today showed people a glimpse of the scale of the spectacle, with spooky music blaring over the speakers as people went on their way. High winds nearly derailed efforts, as once one doll was inflated, it was quickly taken down again.

But onlookers have speculated as to what it could mean, many arriving at the same conclusion: Squid Game.

The popular Netflix TV show broadcasts its final episodes tonight with the release of season 3, earning a final jewel in it's crown as one of Netflix's most-watched series, and at one point was the most-watched program in 94 countries.

Its popularity is clear, and the event at the Tyne shows just how global this show has become. Mysterious logos accompanied the doll as it was inflated, adding that the show was available to watch now on Netflix.

The sheer scale of the 15-metre-tall inflated dolls can be seen along the Quayside, the inflated doll towering over workers and rivalling the height of the bridge itself, standing tall in the shadow of the Baltic.

Not much is known yet as to what could be coming next with the hubbub around the Quayside. Music from the show had been playing over loudspeakers today in what seemed to be a rehearsal.

Most of the setting up was happening on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, with more workers on the banks.

The Korean drama attracted global attention for its tackling of issues such as the lure of capitalism, the glorification of violence and the prevalence of inequality. Squid Game Season 1 still ranks as the most popular show on Netflix ever.

At the end of its third series, the show will live on as famed director David Fincher is set to helm the American production Squid Game.
