Family open day returning to Hull Truck Theatre with everything from free tours to face painting

A full programme of family-friendly activities is on the way

Hull Truck Theatre’s family open day makes its return this month, with something to entertain all ages. The free event is taking place on Saturday, June 13, from 11am to 3pm.

Hull Truck Theatre and its neighbour the Albemarle Music Centre will present the event, which is set to be a day of discovery, creativity and exclusive experiences. Audiences and members of the local community will be invited to see what really goes on behind the scenes of both working venues.

At Hull Truck Theatre, the theme is “access all areas” and families not only have the chance to get involved together but also to learn about the different ways in which Hull Truck Theatre makes theatre as welcoming and accessible as possible, for everyone. There will be loads to get involved with on the day, including technical theatre workshops, stagecraft, drama workshops, arts and crafts, face painting and a soft play area, for children under three.

You can also catch a glimpse of the inner workings of a theatre with backstage tours available to book now, limited places available. A BSL interpreter will also be available on site all day.

At the Albemarle Music Centre, you will be able to celebrate the joy of music with live performances from Beats Bus, and take part in drum circles, instrument “try-out” stations, The Big Sing and early years workshops. Emma Lightowler, communications manager at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “Hull Truck Theatre’s family open day is always a great day out.

"We love doing the backstage tour and seeing all the bits we never see or appreciate when we are just watching a show. There’s lots of free things for families to do, we always come home with faces painted and some crafty creations.”

There is also a chance to win four free tickets to one of this year’s Christmas shows, Wind in the Willows or Hansel & Gretel. Simply complete the passport trail and hand it in at the Passport Desk at family open day, to be entered into the draw.

You can turn up on the day, no need to book, apart from for the backstage tours, whose times are 11.15am; noon; 12.45pm; 1.30pm; 2.15pm. Maximum of four tickets for per customer for the tours.
