Police issue travel advice for day of Queen's funeral with trams set to pause

Buses and Metrolink services will operate to a Sunday timetable on the national Bank Holiday

Trams in Greater Manchester will pause on Monday as the Queen's state funeral is held.

Greater Manchester Police has issued travel advice ahead of the official service, which will take place at 11am at Westminster Abbey in London. The force has warned people to expect trains to be 'exceptionally-busy' between now and Monday as people make their way to the capital.

Police also said that Metrolink services and buses will operate to a Sunday timetable on the national Bank Holiday and minutes' silences will be held on public transport on both Sunday and Monday. At the end of the State Funeral of Her Majesty The Queen on Monday, a two-minute silence will be held.

Trams will pause at 11.50am and will resume following the silence. Passengers onboard will be told when the silence begins, police said.

On Sunday evening, a one-minute silence will also be held on transport services at 8pm as part of a National Moment of Reflection for the Queen. A standard weekday timetable will operate on the trains on Monday, though an 'unprecedented' amount of passengers are likely to be travelling to London over the coming days.

People are being urged to book tickets in advance. The latest travel information can be found here.

Before the funeral, the Queen will lie in state at Westminster Hall. Her coffin will travel from Buckingham Palace for the final time later today, with the Royal Family accompanying their matriarch on foot for the journey.
