'Wales' thinnest house' sells for almost double guide price after bidding war

'(It) was so small I could touch each wall while standing in the lounge'. But this tiny property was clearly in demand at the auction

A tiny, one-bedroom property in the Rhondda Fawr village of Pentre has sold at auction after it created a substantial amount of interest online and across social media. It was listed for £23,000 and was just two metres wide behind the front door.

Sean Roper, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “The really quirky lot saw great interest from all over the place with many intrigued with the size and shape of the slim property and what they could do with it being so compact

“This really unusual cottage was so small I could touch each wall while standing in the lounge. It’s a miniscule house to say the least." For more property stories sent to your inbox twice a week sign up to the property newsletter here.

But the cute spaces inside the house did not deter bidders, with a total of nine people competing to win the property by lodging a total of 35 bids via the Paul Fosh Auctions website, to reach the final selling price of £44,500 - almost double the guide price for less than half the size of a standard terrace house in the south Wales valleys.

At the end of the timed, online auction, two bidders fought to win the tiny terrace, taking the bids from £38,000 to the eventual sold price of £44,500 in just two minutes.

Paul Roper said: “People realised that although small the terraced cottage-style property has all you need because it manages to pack a lot in despite its size. As well as UPVC double glazing and gas central heating there is a lounge and kitchen on the ground floor."

From the front the house looks skinny but it can claim to be a bit of a Tardis abode because as the open-plan lounge diner flows into the kitchen it widens and can happily host all the cupboard space and appliances one person or a couple need.

The surprises keep coming at the end of the kitchen because a door opens out onto a sunny courtyard garden easily large enough to entertain some friends, joined by a mesmerising and panoramic view of the rooftops and hills of the valley.

At the end, a detached garage, accessed via a dead-end lane at the back of the terrace, offers all the storage an occupant could need or a home for the car away from the busy road at the front of the house.

Back inside and upstairs the landing has access to the bedroom that utilises most of the wall space with built-in cupboards to offer as much storage as possible plus a bathroom that just about squeezes a full-sized bath into the space.

Paul said: "Altogether it is a very neat and attractive package in what is a lovely and well-connected part of south Wales. There are a fantastic range of local amenities, and the bustling high street of Treorchy is close by with good road links to bustling Pontypridd and the A470.

He added: "The cottage may now become a cosy home or perhaps a buy to let property or to let out for holidays." For more property, renovation, and interior design stories join our Amazing Welsh Homes Facebook group here.
