A 24-hour strike by four rail unions on July 8 to July 9 caused the first complete shutdown on the London Underground for 13 years. The dispute arose over a new night service and the pay and conditions offered to workers expected to cover more anti-social working hours. Londoners relied on other forms of transport - trains, trams, buses, boats, bikes and their own feet - to get around the city.
